Pediatric Anesthesia and Analgesia Masterclass

This class was presented at the 2015 North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) Conference in Orlando, FL on January 19, 2015.

Environment Description: This 2 hour class was a limited enrollment course at the conference with a maximum audience of 30. The venue was a smaller room with round tables rather than the traditional lecture hall set up.

Presentation:  The first half of the class involved a presentation where each pertinent body system was reviewed with a focus on the differences between the pediatric/neonatal system and the adult system. The goal of the presentation was to introduce how and why the pediatric patient reacts differently to anesthesia than the adult patient.  Click here to view the presentation slides.

Participation: There was a short break after the presentation during which time I placed a laminated card on each table. Each card had a scenario involving pediatric anesthesia/analgesia. Once we reconvened, each table became a group and they were asked to address the question/problem on their card. Click here to view the scenarios used.  Participants were asked to use the information presented earlier and the class handouts along with their previous knowledge and experiences to solve their scenario. After most teams completed their plan (some were not quite able to complete it due to time), a spokesperson for each team presented their scenario and their response. As the facilitator, I asked questions that were sparked by each team's response and allowed for the group to respond. Using this constructivist approach helped make the information presented more meaningful and allowed for previous knowledge to mesh with new information.
